Giraffes Can Swim?????

June 9, 2010 – 12:01 pm

Scientists have used the world of Mathematics to now prove that giraffes can swim – even though they wouldn’t be very good at it and nobody has ever seen them do it. A couple of scientists, one from England, the other from Canada decided to investigate whether or not giraffes could swim. Why, I’m not really sure. They created a digital giraffe, and using math calculations involving weight, mass, size, shape, lung capacity, center of gravity, rotation dynamics and flotation dynamics found that a full sized adult giraffe would become buoyant in 2.8 metres of water. But after becoming buoyant, a giraffe would be unstable in the water due to its long, heavy legs, short body and long neck. So he would be able to swim sort of. The study is found in the Journal of Theoretical Biology. Just thought you’d like to know if anyone should ask. You are so welcome.
